Sandbox, sandbox, sandbox... I guess if your a new site you have to think about it. Funding Universe (one of Paul Allen's companies, majority owner still I think) has some issues with it. Mainly because the angel venture capital industry typically has very littel growth with new sites, and exitsing ones usually have very little content, but their (major players) sites have been up for decades (late 80's ealry 90's).
This is just an example of to say that I believe that the Google "Sandbox" is specific to groups of keywords or if you will industries.
But like Seth Godin says, I may be wrong but, thats my opinion.
What is your take on the sandbox?

I think the term sandbox kind of gives the wrong image. In fact, for the longest time, I argued that the sandbox didn't exist, mainly because the term makes me think of this box where the site doesn't show up at all. But that's not how the sandbox works. It's more like a filter that basically filters out newer sites that haven't earned Google's trust with enough high quality links. It happens a lot, particularly with brand new sites/domains. The way to beat the filter or sandbox or whatever you want to call it, is to get links that are highly trusted by Google. Once Google sees that those high-trust sites link to your new site, they start giving it their love.
I don't think it's specific to any specific industries or keywords, it's just more noticeable with competitive industries because much more "trustworthy" links are required to show up at all.
Speaking of FundingUniverse, I think some good (high trust) links would help the site, but they also have some duplicate content issues with all the state sites that share the same news and other content.
BTW-I don't know of any sites that have been around since the 80's...in any industry.
